(1) One follow-up comment "DavidInHartford" submitted that was instantly approved --- apparently because it (deceptively) sounded exactly like one of "rich_misty's"

The day after "DavidInHartford's" May 30 encounter with "rich_misty," he recalled a website a friend had forwarded him some time ago, titled "Picture Documentary: US Troops Caught Torturing Iraqi Kids." Instead of leading to pictures depicting horrors (whether fake or real), however, the site hosts pictures of Iraqi children receiving gifts from American soldiers, playing with them, smiling, etc.

Out of curiosity, "DavidInHartford" submitted the following comment. As noted in the timestamp at lower right on the PDF excerpt below, HuffPost reviewed, approved and decided to publish it within a few minutes, as is further demonstrated by the two comments it received:
DavidInHartford

Why would there be such a disparity between HuffPost's approach to reviewing, approving and publishing this comment --- versus the ones that "DavidInHartford" submitted, defending American soldiers against "rich_misty's" blood libels against them?

The following Addendum items provide important facts upon which the reader may formulate an intelligent answer.

(2) An indication of how, thanks to HuffPost's protection of "rich_misty," other users came to believe his blood libels (and links) against the U.S. military

As noted earlier, the PDFs of these threads (available upon request at huffwatcher1 (at) gmail.com) clearly show that other users found "rich_misty's" assertions to be compelling, especially when (apparently) bolstered by his claim to be a "criminal psychologist." They repeatedly "thank" him for his hard work and diligence.

Then, however, HuffPost began to approve and publish the rantings of one of "rich_misty's" comrades at HuffPost, "HyperInfluential," who first began re-posting the links to fake photos of our soldiers, as originally provided by "rich_misty," and mimic the horrific lies that he espoused. The following is but one example that HuffPost approved and published --- barely 24 hours after my "engagement" with "rich_misty":
HyperInfluential
I can't figure out if you guys are paid obfuscators or if you're really that reptilian that you don't get why people are upset that we raped children as part of a standard operating procedure, no matter where or when it took place, or which batch of photos shows it.

This was far from an isolated case. In repeated instances, Huff-Watch observed other users consistently rising to "rich_misty's" defense, and accusing anyone who substantively challenged him of "denying the truth." This fact is validated by the skyrocketing number of users who signed up to be "fans" of "rich_misty" in the following weeks, which would not have been possible had HuffPost not been actively protecting him, and his blood libels and incendiary hatred.

For example, on June 15 "rich_misty" had 339 fans, and 23,063 posts:

But by August 30, ten weeks later, he had accumulated nearly another 500 "fans" (up to 827 now), after being permitted to post another 15,516 comments (now totaling 38,579).

This is an average of 1,550 comments per week, or 220 per day, or per day, every day. As "rich_misty" averages about 16 hours a day on HuffPost, this means that it has permitted him to post an average of one comment every four minutes for 16 hours straight, every day.

And as is indicated in Sections 4-6, HuffPost not only continued to enable "rich_misty" to engage in his obsessive violations of its policies, and his blood libels against American soldiers, it banned users --- including "DavidInHartford" --- who stood up to him.

October 23, 2009 Addendum: As shown below, HuffPost has now permitted "rich_misty" to rack up 41,653 comments, and 972 "fans":

(3) An indication of the true extent to which HuffPost apparently protects "rich_misty" (and possibly other anti-U.S. military, anti-Semitic propagandists like him)

In the days following the encounters documented in Parts 2 & 3 of this report, Huff-Watch passively observed the top news threads on HuffPost, to see if it was still enabling and protecting "rich_misty" to post his endless blood libels against U.S. soldiers, and other violations of its policies.

In every instance, as "rich_misty's" comment archive shows, he was there, posting away, no matter what time of the day or night. Aside from "rich_misty's" continuing blood libels against the U.S. military, and vicious attacks on other users, 24-7, one of his comments that HuffPost approved and published really stood out:
rich misty
The Goderators here remove any personal information I would post. They watch my back.

Posted 06:46 AM on 06/01/2009

"The Goderators"
refers to HuffPost moderators, who:
  • Monitor its comment threads 24-7

  • Review all user comments that are submitted

  • Pick and choose which comments to approve and publish --- and which to reject

  • Pick and choose which users to ban from the site

(*Ed.: Interestingly, although as the .JPG above shows "rich_misty" indeed made this statement, HuffPost has now removed it --- verifiable by following its permalink. This would suggest that HuffPost "goderators" are watching their own backs, too.)

Thus, "rich_misty's" declarative statement that HuffPost moderators "watch my back," and "remove any personal information I would post," is clear indication of (a) how closely they monitor what goes on at HuffPost on a minute-to-minute basis, and (b) the lengths to which they are willing to go to protect one of its most clearly deranged users.

This is especially important to keep in mind when reviewing Sections 4-6 --- how HuffPost was, at the same time, promptly banning users, including "DavidInHartford," who dared to challenge "rich_misty," and accused him of being a deeply disturbed individual for engaging in such activities.

(4) "Rich_misty" apparently felt so protected by HuffPost that he began to "flag" other users

HuffPost enables one user to "flag" others, to alert it review potentially abusive comments.

The following comments, taken from "rich_misty's" comment archive, show that after his "victories" against "DavidInHartford" (and presumably others), "rich_misty" felt so emboldened and protected that he began routinely "flagging" those users who dared to disagree with him, or demonstrated the truth behind his vicious blood libels. This could only be done in the hopes of getting HuffPost to remove these users' comments --- or ban them altogether. His rationale for "flagging" them was for what he claimed were their "lies," and thread-spamming:
Flagged and reported
posted May 27, 2009 at 13:02:58

Yep. flagged... Next lie I am reporting him too.

(5) HuffPost refused to honor "rich_misty's" open request that it ban him --- and instead banned users who stood up to him --- including "DavidInHartford"

Apparently, "rich_misty" became very upset because HuffPost dared to delay publishing, or censored some of his comments --- and he openly requested that the site ban him:
rich misty
Okay... I sent the email asking them to delete my account.
I want to thank my 405 fans for their appreciation and support during my time here. I will
hang around until the my profile is removed.
Posted 09:09 PM on 07/02/2009

Yet as is evidenced herein, HuffPost refused to comply with "rich_misty's" request.

When "DavidInHartford" taunted him about this, however, and suggested he get psychiatric help --- and implied that HuffPost won't get rid of him because his obsessive behavior and posting leads to revenues for the site (via increased page views) --- HuffPost banned "DavidInHartford":
rich misty

Sometime within the next few hours, HuffPost banned
"DavidInHartford" --- but left "rich_misty" free to continue:

Another example was the June 4 case of user "SAS2005," who, like "DavidInHartford," could detect that "rich_misty" is a deeply disturbed individual --- and told him so:
rich misty
And you want to w.ack off to video of him being tortured.

SAS2005

Note: The colored word highlights are there because this image was sourced through Google Cache, using the search function --- the only way it could be retrieved after HuffPost deleted this exchange.

HuffWatch bookmarked SAS2005 as someone to watch, to see what happens to him/her after this direct assault --- which "rich_misty" later "flagged."

The next day, "SAS2005's" comment profile revealed that HuffPost had banned him/her:

Another example is "WilliamG," a long-term HuffPost user who, as shown at in the PDF at right, merely expressed his resentment at "rich_misty's" incessant, inflammatory accusations against him re sexual torture, etc.

It is interesting to note that not only did "rich_misty" continue to assail "WilliamG," but his ("rich_misty's") disciple, "HyperInfluential" (see Section 2) joined in as well --- all of which HuffPost reviewed, approved and decided to publish.

Yet HuffPost made the decision to ban "WilliamG" --- not "rich_misty," and not "HyperInfluential."

These are but several examples of the extent to which HuffPost not only protected, but enabled and emboldened "rich_misty," and anti-U.S. military propagandists like him.

(6) The continuing pathology of "rich_misty" on HuffPost --- and its continuing efforts to protect him

During his 16-24 hour "spam-and-attackathons" over the next ten weeks, "rich_misty" would follow a consistent pattern: On every "news" thread, no matter the topic:
  • He would post original (non-response) comments, accuse all American soldiers and Republicans of engaging in, supporting and being aroused by "kiddiesex torture and murder"

  • He would respond to on-topic comments by other users with accusations that they, personally, engage in or support "kiddiesex torture and murder"

  • When the victim replied in kind, or demanded that "rich_misty" provide proof of any of this, he would spam page after page with his accusations, and the links to hate-propaganda sites and discredited information, etc. that he'd posted hundreds (if not thousands) of times before

  • In many instances, as shown above and below, HuffPost would ban the victim --- either via its own initiative, or at "rich_misty's" request (via "flagging" them)

The following are but a few of the 15,000+ nonstop abusive comments by "rich_misty" that HuffPost
reviewed, approved and decided to publish, from May 30 through August 30, 2009, and the "news" thread on which they occurred:

June 10, on: Whitacre, New GM Chairman: "I Don't Know Anything About Cars"

(7) APRIL 2010 UPDATE: HuffPost is still enabling and protecting "rich misty" to hijack its threads with his off-topic, inflammatory accusations --- THEN MAKES HIM A MODERATOR

The following screencap is from April 17, 2010 --- taken from a thread dedicated to discussion of the potential criminal prosecution of Goldman Sachs:

And note that at this point, HuffPost had enabled "rich misty" long enough to accumulate 1,156 "fans" --- 300 more than Sept 1, 2009 --- while at the same time, it has been banning other users after as few as six non-violating comments.

April 29, 2010: NOW HUFFPOST HAS MADE RICH MISTY A MODERATOR

On this day, Arianna Huffington published a blog article in which she announced dramatic changes to HuffPost's comment system, highlighting the fact that certain users have now been made "Community Moderators." She claimed that this is an effort to help HuffPost:
  • Keep its comment threads free of "objectionable* (and) inappropriate* comments"

  • Maintain a "civil... (and) non-toxic" commenting environment*

(*see HuffPost's Comment Policy and Terms of Service for the standards against which comments are to be judged.)

And here are some of "rich_misty's" first comments over the following days, with his new "MODERATOR" powers, openly threatening to delete the posts of other users --- and even getting other users banned --- all with HuffPost's consent, and backing:

And as a reminder, here is "rich_misty," now a "MODERATOR," openly admitting that he requested that HuffPost cancel HIS account, but it REFUSED to do so (see Section 5, above):
