The "Jacob2217" Test

.

On the evening of May 25, 2009, HuffPost’s top headline story was:
Secret Israeli Report: Venezuela, Bolivia Supplying Iran With Uranium For Its Nuclear Program

Anticipating that HuffPost would continue its documented history of reviewing, approving and deciding to publish user comments containing vicious libels and conspiracy theories against Israel, and possibly anti-Semitic hatred, in violation of its own Comment Policy & Terms of Service ("CP-TOS"), a Huff-Watch operative initiated a "test."

The purpose of this test, according to the operative, was:

"(1) To create a new user account, “Jacob2217”

"(2) To attempt to post factual information in defense of Israel, in response to the anti-Israel hatred, libels, conspiracy theories that I anticipated HuffPost would allow to flood this thread

"(3) To document whether HuffPost would allow my comments to be published"

The results of this test were:
  • Of the 10 comments "Jacob2217" submitted, HuffPost refused to publish 4 of them.

  • Of the 6 comments that HuffPost published, it removed 2 soon thereafter.

  • Barely six hours after "Jacob2217" logged off, HuffPost banned "Jacob2217".

Although several of "Jacob2217's" comments were "snarky," none violated HuffPost's CP-TOS. This point cannot be emphasized strongly enough, given the fact that HuffPost has protected and enabled certain users to pathologically, egregiously violate its CP-TOS, some for years --- while at the same time censoring and/or banning users who express dissenting views, some after as few as six comments. This is all documented here.

Particularly in regards to "news" threads focused on Israeli affairs, HuffPost has enabled both new and long-term users to engage in vicious anti-Semitic libels and conspiracy theories. This phenomenon reached its zenith during Israel's recent Operation Cast Lead, which is the focus of an upcoming special report on Huff-Watch. An archive of some of the user comments that HuffPost reviewed, approved and decided to publish that contained anti-Israel libels, conspiracy theories and anti-Semitic hatred during Cast Lead is located here.

"Jacob2217's" test, which is documented in detail in the DocStoc window below, showcases exactly what comments were submitted, and what happened to them --- and him --- as time went by. You can receive a PDF of the full report by emailing huffwatcher1 (at) gmail.com.

Jacob2217 test -

Via its automated system, Jacob2217 sent in this IM to at HuffPost management 1:24am on May 27:
“My screen name is Jacob2217. I registered and started commenting yesterday but today I cannot. It keeps telling me to log in, I try but it won't let me. Have I been banned, and if so, why?”

HuffPost provided no reply. Yet at the same time, HuffPost continued to review, approve and publish the comments containing hate, libels and conspiracy theories against Israel and Jews, while censoring and banning users such as Jacob2217.
