HuffPost relabels cop-murderer as "activist"

.
On April 15, HuffPost continued its practice of deliberately misleading its readers, by misidentifying convicted murders and terror-supporters as "activists."

This time, HuffPost employed its journalistic malpractice in an effort to rehabilitate the image of  Mumia Abu-Jamal, the radical leftist and militant founding member of the Black Panthers.  Here's the "news" headline that HuffPost ran about him on its front page, on April 15:
Teacher Sparks Outcry For Asking Students To Write To Jailed Activist

To fully grasp HuffPost's malicious betrayal of even the most elementary standards of journalistic integrity, let's remind ourselves of who this person is that it labeled a "jailed activist."  Courtesy of DiscoverTheNetworks (emphasis added):
Officer Daniel Faulker
[T]he event that decisively catapulted Abu-Jamal into the public eye occurred shortly after 3:55 a.m. on December 9, 1981, when a 25-year-old white Philadelphia police officer named Daniel Faulkner made a traffic stop of William Cook, Abu-Jamal’s brother, who was driving the wrong way down a one-way street. Faulkner pulled behind Cook's car, radioed for police backup, approached Cook’s vehicle, and ordered the driver to get out of his car.
While Faulkner handcuffed the driver, Abu-Jamal, who was employed at that time as a cab driver, was parked across the street in his taxi.  He suddenly got out of his vehicle, ran toward Faulkner, and shot him in the back. As the officer fell, he drew his own gun and managed to shoot Abu-Jamal in the chest, wounding but not killing him. The gun-wielding cabdriver then fired repeatedly at Faulkner, finally dispatching him from close range with a bullet between his eyes. Abu Jamal's presence near the scene of the roadside stop at that particular moment has led to serious speculation that William Cook had intentionally led Faulkner into an ambush—one that had all the earmarks of other Black Panther provocations in places like Newark and Oakland.
HuffPost's "activist"
The body of evidence placing Abu-Jamal at the scene of Faulkner’s killing was overwhelming. When the arresting officers arrived at the scene, Abu-Jamal was sitting on a curb near Faulkner’s corpse, with a fresh gunshot wound incurred from the young officer’s weapon.
Not only did five witnesses see Abu-Jamal shoot Faulkner, but the bullets that were later pulled from Faulkner’s chest and brain were matched to the .38 caliber handgun that was registered to Abu-Jamal and which was sitting at his feet when the police arrived at the murder scene. Moreover, the gun had five empty cartridges when investigators found it.
This is the monster whom HuffPost labeled an "activist."  And by claiming he's a "jailed activist," without referencing the fact that he is a convicted murderer, HuffPost was deliberately continuing its racial lies and incitement, which HUFF-WATCH documented in extreme detail in the special report, "Did Huffington Post's incitement and bias contribute to the murders of two NYPD officers?"

Moving on, HuffPost knew, or should have known, that the "teacher" in its headline did not "ask" her students - third-graders - to write get well cards to this convicted murderer, she ordered them to do so. How do we know this?  Because the AP, HuffPost's #1 most-cited news source, reported on April 11 - four days before HuffPost published its "story" - ran this story about the incident:

This is part of HuffPost's continuing, willful pattern of deliberately misleading its readers, by misidentifying convicted murders and terror-supporters as "activists."

A few well-documented incidents of this pathological behavior, by the #1 most widely-read online "newspaper" in the world, which has repeatedly claimed it is "nonpartisan":

Why Hamas loves HuffPost: Marwan Barghouti image-whitewashing edition

In this incident, HuffPost severely edited a news story it sourced from the AP to falsely depict a convicted Palestinian mass-murderer and terror kingpin as a"jailed leader."  Only after HUFF-WATCH's detailed report reached the blogosphere that HuffPost surrender, and post the entire, unedited source article - but then lied as to when it was published, in a failed attempt to cover its tracks.

Huffpo Newspeak: Out "Terrorists", In "Activists" (Jawa Report)

In this incident, our friends at the Jawa Report ran with the screencaps we provided, to cover this story.  In summary, in HuffPost's endless jihad against the U.S. intelligence and military communities, it falsely alleged that the NSA was "spying" on "activists porn habits."

But who are the "activists" to whom HuffPost referred?  Turns out they're Al Qaeda supporters and donors - as its own "news" article revealed.  HuffPost deliberately ignored that fact, and relabeled supporters of the terrorists who murdered 2,977 Americans on 9/11, and countless U.S. soldiers and intelligence personnel since then.

All part of HuffPost's endless lies, bias, and incitement against police officers, the U.S. military, Israel and Jews.

How does this all compare to Arianna Huffington's claims that HuffPost is a professional "newspaper," and better than its competitors?

Huffington Post: Hamas's mouthpiece in the USA

.

Special for The Algemeiner

On Monday, November 11, the Huffington Post featured a front-page story, sourced from the Associated Press, about Hamas hiring its first female “spokesperson,” Isra Almodallal, replete with a staged picture of her looking like a teenage U.S. blogger.

In the article, Almodallal voices her support for standard-issue genocidal Hamas threats (that all of Israel should be wiped out, as it sits on Palestinian land), and her belief that Hamas has a bad reputation not because of its terrorism, genocidal threats, or suicide bombings, but because of “unfair Israeli media.” Her new job, she says, is to make the Palestinian issues “more human” to the outside world.
She will be responsible for the Gaza government's communications with the international media.  "We are looking forward to having a different and unique language," said Almodallal in an interview in her Gaza City office, on her first week in the job. "We will make the (Palestinian) issues more human."
Ironically, earlier this year, another pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel propagandist, Ahmed Shihab-Eldin – who happens to be one of the top hosts of HuffPostLive, its video “news” service – described his job in almost identical terms: as being “to humanize” the Palestinians:
“My job... is to humanize my people, my heritage…”

If you define “humanizing” a culture as whitewashing terrorists and publishing false, incendiary propaganda about their victims (namely Jews), as HuffPost has been doing for four years, then HuffPost’s senior management (which repeatedly, falsely claims it is a “nonpartisan” news operation) has been allowing Shihab-Eldin to fulfill his “job,” and then some.  See the following links for more details:
Is HuffPost even more anti-Israel than the Iranian regime is? Yes – and here’s the proof

HuffPost video “news” host pushes Hamas lies, ignores savage reality of Hamas

Ahmed Shihab-Eldin Cheers for Gaza and Qatar

People like Ahmed Shihab-Eldin are Destroying Huffington Post Live

Ahmed Shihab-Eldin Counts the Bodies
Perhaps Hamas’ new propagandist spokeswoman should apply for a job with the Huffington Post.  And judging by his actions, we already know that Ahmed Shihab-Eldin is fully capable of taking over for her, in case Hamas’ propaganda begins to suffer.

.
November 14 update: HuffPost spits in the face of another Jew murdered by a Palestinian

On November 13, HuffPost published – deep on a secondary page – an obscurely-titled, sanitized version of the story of the savage murder of 19-year-old Eden Atias by a Palestinian teenager.  As shown in the JPG below, the URL that HuffPost assigned to the piece is “palestinian-teen-kills-israeli-soldier”; it knew full well the details of this brutal attack.  Yet the headline that HuffPost wrote, “IDF Soldier Stabbing Could Impair Peace Talks,” intentionally creates an unclear impression. Does that mean the IDF soldier stabbed someone – or that the IDF soldier was stabbed?  Did anyone die?

Contrast this with the gory, personalized, sympathetic coverage the HuffPost routinely gives to jihadis and Palestinians who meet with bad fates as a result of Hamas or PA terrorism against Jews:

Soon after, as The Algemeiner reported, a Hamas spokesperson issued an official statement by the terror group, celebrating the murder of Eden:
“Hamas welcomes the soldier stabbing in Afula. This is a natural response to the crimes committed by Israel against the Palestinian people and proof of the failure of political negotiations,” a Hamas spokesman said.
HuffPost, however, chose to ignore that story.  Was this decision made because it might clash with the positive image it had given just two days earlier to Hamas's new spokeswoman?

Instead, HuffPost’s editors (including Shihab-Eldin?) decided other “news” stories were far more deserving of top-line coverage – such as a propaganda story about Vladmir Putin, and an assortment of celebrity gossip and various nonsense, such as “the $500 milkshake.”

Apparently, this was the latest effort by HuffPost to “humanize” Palestinians – this time, at the expense of dehumanizing a 19-year-old Jew, whom one of them savagely murdered.

HuffPost headline falsely claims Israel broke peace, used tank to fire on Gaza civilians

.
Our latest installment in how HuffPost --- the world's #1 most-read online "newspaper" --- takes factual news and deliberately, maliciously, pathologically distorts it, in ways that can only serve two purposes: (1) to incite hate against Israel and Jews on false grounds, and (2) to protect militant Islamists from being held to public account for their threats and violent actions against them.
From Times of Israel: "300 Palestinians attempt to breach Gaza border fence"

Earlier today, Hamas allowed (ordered?) around 300 angry Palestinians to rush the Israeli border, which they did by walking over a 1,000 foot no-man's-land buffer zone that Hamas knows it is not to allow any Gazans to enter.   As anyone who pays attention to Israel knows full well, it is at borders such as these that Gaza militants from Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad recently fired an anti-tank guided missile at an IDF jeep on routine patrol, launching it and its occupants an estimated 20 meters into the air, seriously injuring several Israeli soldiers.  And that was before the recent 8-day conflict.

The IDF spokesman reported that:

  • Regarding the border incident, IDF soldiers were ordered to first fire in the air to warn Gazans to stay away from the fence
  • When they didn't stop charging the fence, soldiers were ordered to fire only at their legs
  • In the broader context, since the cease fire was agreed to, Hamas has fired between 12-20 rockets into Israel
One of the leaders of this surging mob refused to back away from the fence, and was shot and killed with a bullet from an IDF rifle.

The AP source story played the story relatively "straight" -- with the headline reading:

"Gaza Crowds Surge at Israel Border Fence; 1 Dead"

ABC played the AP story "straight":

NBC also played the AP story "straight":

So did most of the other mainstream media outlets (using the search string "ap" and the first sentence of the raw AP story.

The Times of Israel, however, posted pictures of the rioting Palestinians:

So how did HuffPost --- the self-proclaimed "nonpartisan" newspaper --- decide to play the exact same source story from the AP?

Here's the headline that HuffPost crafted and positioned on its front page:

Let's examine this, piece by piece:

(1) HuffPost's front page headline copy: "Israeli Gunfire Kills Palestinian, Injures 19 Near Border"

There is only one implication in this inflammatory, libelous headline: that a bunch of Israeli soldiers were basically sitting around, and one said to the others, "Say, there's a bunch of peaceful Palestinians, planting daisies on their land, while singing 'kumbaya.'  I'm bored --- let's go shoot some of 'em!!!"  HuffPost gave no account of why there was any gunfire at all.  (And as we've reported previously, HuffPost ran no --- zero --- front page stories about any of the hundreds of rockets, missiles and mortars that Hamas fired into Israel between Nov. 10-14, which is what led to the 8-day conflict.)

Next, let's examine that picture that HuffPost chose to accompany that headline: a tank?  With its turret pointed right at civilians?  HuffPost made the conscious decision to actually imply (claim) that Israel opened fire with a tank on Palestinian civilians.  News flash for HuffPost --- which probably doesn't have a single person in its newsroom (which is larger than the New York Times'), who ever served in uniform: If an Israeli tank opened fire on a group of civilians, there'd be a hell of a lot more than one of them killed.

So why would HuffPost deliberately lie about this?  You should ask that question to HuffPost's senior management (and advertisers).  And didn't Arianna Huffington publicly announce that she prohibited "inflammatory claims" at her site?  Why yes, she did, years ago.  That, however, is just another of the lies that she has pathologically tells the public, and presumably, her advertisers (including your tax-funded Cadillac -- the official co-sponsor of HuffPostLive).

(2) Now let's examine the story page to which that inflammatory, libelous headline led:

HuffPost actually implied that it was the Israelis who breached the "cease fire" ---- but now, with "gunfire" instead of (implied) tank fire.

HuffPost made no mention whatsoever in its headline that it was, in fact, the Palestinians who repeatedly have broken the cease fire, and the terms which each side agreed to uphold to maintain it.

The inestimable Melanie Phillips demolished the lie upon which HuffPost's false allegation is based (emphasis added):

Well there’s a surprise – rioting in Gaza at the Israel border yesterday and today, when dozens of Palestinians hurled rocks at Israeli forces and tried to breach the border fence within the 300 metres-wide buffer zone within which no Palestinian can enter, established by the Israelis as a deterrent to cross-border terrorism. Palestinians reported that one man was killed and six injured after the Israelis opened fire.

HuffPost omits Hamas celebrating, justifying bus bombing from source AP story; more

.
Summary:

  • Starting at 5:30am, and by 8:00am EST on Nov. 21, newspapers and blogs that use AP as primary source published top-line stories of Tel Aviv bus bombing that included the Hamas official's praise and justification of this terror act.
    .
  • HuffPost's version of the AP story, however, which it did not make a headline, omitted the Hamas official's praise and justification, and falsely claimed Hamas had made no official statement about the incident.
    .
  • These are not isolated incidents or "accidents," but rather, are part of HuffPost's continuous pattern of protecting Hamas and effectively doing its PR --- while giving top-line, enduring coverage to stories containing inflammatory accusations against Israel and Jews that it knows (or should know) are untrue

Background

Shortly after 5:00am EST, news broke from Tel Aviv of a civilian bus bombing that occurred directly across from IDF headquarters.  At latest count, at least 27 people were injured, several severely.  Hamas made an official statement to the AP, praising and justifying the attack, which it reported in its story, written by Ariel David, minutes later:

While Hamas did not take responsibility for the attack, it praised the bombing.

"We consider it a natural response to the occupation crimes and the ongoing massacres against civilians in the Gaza Strip," Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum told The Associated Press.

At 5:33am, the National Post (Canada) posted the original version of the AP story as its splash, which included Hamas praising the attack in the headline:
Hamas praises attack after bomb rips through Tel Aviv bus, but doesn’t take credit

And in the body of the National Post article (again, published at 5:33am):

The other big news bureau, Reuters, also ran the story at 8:12am, with Hamas's praise for, and celebration of the attack in the headline:

By 8:00am, many other news sites and blogs, small and large, reported the AP story as-is, or reported other sources who had documented Hamas praising the attack, and even threatening more, including CNN, Fox News and Legal Insurrection (click to see screencaps).

HuffPost ran the AP story --- but not as the headline, and edited out the part about Hamas praising and justifying the attack

The AP is the bureau upon which HuffPost most often relies for its raw news content.  In addition to being the world's #1 most-read online "newspaper," HuffPost also has a larger news room than the New York Times.  It has all the assets to root out every one of the most obscure stories it featured on its front page today, including:

You get the idea:
HuffPost has hundreds of researchers, editors and journalists who scour world news, 24-7, up to the second, every day.  There is no possible way that HuffPost was unaware of (a) the bus bombing, and (b) the fact that Hamas was praising and celebrating it.  Yet here is how
the self-proclaimed "nonpartisan newspaper" decided to play this story:

(1) From the time the bus bombing story broke (5:14am EST) to after 10:00am EST, HuffPost decided it was not newsworthy enough to merit its top headline.  It didn't make the story its top headline until around 10:20am.

(2) Until around 1:00pm, HuffPost's version of the AP story falsely claimed "There was no official comment from Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad."  And even after HuffPost updated the story, around 1:00pm, to include Hamas's praise and justification, it never changed the headline --- nor did it post a separate story focusing on this fact.
(3) This is part of HuffPost's continuing pattern of ignoring Hamas's threatening, then taking credit for and celebrating terrorist attacks on Jewish civilians --- yet giving front-page coverage to what it knows are proof-less allegations against Israel and Jews.
(4) As HuffPostMonitor pointed out, HuffPost's headline generically described a "bus explosion" --- as if this bus just magically exploded, without any cause.  This is part of HuffPost's continuing pattern of ascribing no human involvement in attacks on Jews --- when those attacks are perpetrated by Palestinians.
Here is the proof that validates all of these allegations.

(1) From the time the bus bombing story broke (5:14am EST) to after 10:00am EST, HuffPost decided it was not newsworthy enough to merit its top headline.

This screencap was taken at 8:16am.  Instead of running the bus bombing story as its top headline as soon as it broke, HuffPost decided that a two-day-old story designed to whip up more hate against conservative activist Grover Norquist should remain the blaring headline:

It wasn't until after 10:00am --- 5 hours after HuffPost became aware of the bus bombing --- that it decided to make the story its top headline:

Note the subhead: "Bus explodes in Tel Aviv, injuring 10."  While this might be an appropriate initial statement, the fact is that by the time HuffPost published this headline, it knew (or should have known) that this was no mere "explosion" --- it was a bombing.

HuffPost's story page was no better (screencap taken at 9:01am)

(2) Until around 1:00pm, HuffPost's version of the AP story falsely claimed "There was no official comment from Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad."

I found the bus bombing story at HuffPost at around 8:15am, and noticed immediately that unlike the other versions of the story being reported, HuffPost's version not only didn't feature Hamas's statements in the headline (or a separate story), it actually denied there were any official statements.

I began taking screencaps of the story page at 8:15am.  This screencap was taken at 10:00am --- note the copy in the last sentence:

"There was no official comment from Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad."

At 10:44am, having not found a single reference on HuffPost to the fact that Hamas had praised and celebrated this bombing, I did a search on the the spokesman's name: Fawzi Barhoum. HuffPost's own search engine confirmed that it had no mention of Hamas's spokesman on this day:

Why would HuffPost omit Hamas's praise for and celebration of the bombing from the story?

Only HuffPost's senior management can answer that question.  You might ask them.  If they refuse to answer, you might pose the question to HuffPost's advertisers, whose money makes this madness possible (except in the case of Cadillac, which is using our tax money to enable HuffPost).

(3) This is part of HuffPost's continuing pattern of ignoring Hamas's threatening, then taking credit for and celebrating terrorist attacks on Jewish civilians --- yet giving front-page coverage to what it knows are proof-less allegations against Israel and Jews.

Examples of HuffPost ignoring Hamas threats, celebrations, etc.

From Nov 17, Hamas officials claimed:

“We (Hamas) have missed suicide attacks. Wait for us soon in the bus stations and cafes.”

As documented here, HuffPost completely ignored this shocking statement --- and instead continued focusing all of its efforts on depicting Israel as the aggressor in the Gaza conflict.

As documented here, in March 2011, when the Fogel family --- including their three-month-old baby --- were slaughtered in their home by Palestinians, HuffPost completely ignored the fact that Hamas and Palestinians were caught on camera openly celebrating, and taking credit for the grisly attack. See "Fogel family slaughter, evidence file," section 4.

As documented here, in December 2010, HuffPost completely ignored all of Hamas's recent terror attacks and genocidal threats against Israel and Jews in general... yet published on its front page what it claimed was Hamas's "commitment to truce with Israel":

Whereas HuffPost ignores Hamas's outrageous threats and acts against Jews, it applies the exact opposite treatment to accusations against Jews and Israel that it knows (or has reason to know) are untrue, or severely decontextualized.

For example, on Nov. 18, HuffPost published as its splash headline, "Sharon's Son: 'Flatten All Of Gaza'." Why does Ariel Sharon's opinion merit any attention --- especially since HuffPost's own story acknowledges that he has zero policy role --- that his occupation is "manag(ing) his family’s farm in Israel"?

From our archives:

  • When al-Jazeera --- one of the world's most notorious pro-terrorist propaganda networks --- posted a totally unverifiable smear, alleging that Israeli guards "humiliated" a female detainee --- HuffPost ran it right on its front page, not knowing whether it was PallyWood propaganda (Links to detailed stories, from left to right: 1, 2, 3)
  • "Outrageous Statements": HuffPost periodically runs items on its front page alluding to "outrageous statements" by Israeli officials and religious figures. (Link)

Yet HuffPost pathologically ignores, and has never run a comparable analysis of "outrageous statements" by Hamas or other radical Islamist terror groups --- which tend to include genocidal threats.
    (Link; more, more)

Then, there was the August 2009 story that HuffPost published on its front page, entitled "Swedish Article Suggests Israeli Troops Kill Palestinians, Harvest Organs."

The Reality: This "news" story was false on a multitude of levels.

Why HuffPost knew, or should have known the story was false/misleading: First, the story itself revealed that the "reporter" admitted he had "no idea, no clue" if the allegations in his "story" are true. Turns out the Palestinian family at the root of the story denied making these claims --- and basic fact-checking reveals that what is alleged is medically impossible.

Did HuffPost's crack team of 53 "editors" fail to do any basic fact-checking into this age-old blood libel against Jews --- or did they ignore what they found? Whichever was the case, it didn't prevent them from matching this inflammatory claim with a picture of grinning Israeli soldiers, marching towards the photographer --- as if they're proud of committing the barbarity that the Swedish "article" (and HuffPost) accused them of.

This false "news" story incited a torrent of hate-filled user comments against Israel and Jews, which HuffPost reviewed, approved and decided to publish.
See complete documentation of this incident here.

The Stimulus And The (Approved) Response: Anti-Semitism and Israel-Hatred on Huffington Post

For example, as documented here, in 2009, when a Palestinian used an ax to murder a 16 year old Jewish boy in Israel, and maim his younger friend, HuffPost claimed only that this was an "ax attack" --- as if axes, like buses, can magically hurt Jews without any human interference.

UPDATES

(1) HuffPost updated the story at about 1:00pm to include the full, unedited version, including Hamas praising and celebrating the attack.

(2) But HuffPost completely removed the story from its front page – so one would never know the reality, if they relied only upon HuffPost for its news. How do we know it removed the story? Because we took a full-page JPG of the front page.

(3) HuffPost also completely ignored the recorded evidence of Hamas openly celebrating the bus bombing, and stating, “God willing, we will be seeing black body bags.” GatewayPundit, a one-man blog, posted the story at 1:13pm.  As of this writing (8:00am, Nov. 22), HuffPost has still not published this story.

How does this all compare to Arianna's claims that HuffPost is a professional "newspaper," and better than its competitors?
